Family Law & Divorce covers a large span of issues and types of litigation, including but not limited to divorce, alimony, separation, custody, visitation, child support, modification, property division, spousal abuse, legitimacy, adoption, and parental rights and responsibilities.
Each state has different statutes pertaining to this area of law. For example, in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire, courts have the authority to award child support and alimony in appropriate circumstances. Although both states have guidelines to assist a judge in the determination of the amount of child support to be awarded, only Massachusetts has a statute that provides for the use of guidelines in awarding alimony.
Other differences exist between the two states, including but not limited to differences as to the age upon which a child is considered to be emancipated and thus no longer entitled to support.
